Dungeons of Yrarbil Information

Dungeons of Yrarbil is a forum based interactive role playing game in which a player takes control over a hero and attempts to purge a dungeon of evil or succeed in a mission given to them. The game is played co-operatively by up to 5 players. Each player takes a turn posting and then the posts are answered by the Dungeon Master with the appropriate responses.

Games Current State: Offline

Below are the game rules and information sections.

This game runs in "Events". The group has to reach and defeat the boss. The # Of Events usually depends on the # of Rooms divided by 2. An adventure will be posted twice a month. Always running Sunday(Hero Pick)-Saturday.

Goal: You have selected your hero and are ready to brave the depths of the evil dungeons of Yrarbil. To win means your life. To lose means your death. Move as a group through the dungeon and reach the boss. Only through his death is victory possible.

Special Game Mode: When deciding to move you may decide to leave a room at any time you want, except if the door is locked and a key needs to be found. However! most rooms contain hidden secrets and loot which yield points. You can choose to beat the boss in a timely manor or try to find all the points.

Point System: Co-Op, Points will be awarded for:

The rules are as follows: *Check the Wiki for more detailed Rules*

  1. Only someone who has purchased a hero can play. If you have not please look at the Character Selection Thread.
  2. Be sure you understand your characters abilities before using them. (See Examples Section Below)
  3. Role Playing is an important part of this game. Not EVERY Post needs to be posted in RP but those who take the extra effort will be rewarded.
  4. If you break your characters "RP Persona" You will receive a Point Penalty. IE: If your playing Beatrice and you RP Her as a mean spirited person the opposite of her Bio.
  5. Everything you do is TRACKED in the Wiki. Want to know who played Kojax before? Check it there. Try to stay in tune with the characters play style.
  6. The group MUST Stick Together at all Times. (No splitting up except for a few exceptions)
  7. The group will decide upon a leader who will guide the navigation of the dungeon within the first challenge.
  8. Do not be confused by the Stat Points they are only there to calculate: Damage, Hp, Action Points and a general overview of a characters persona.
  9. A like on your post from Draxul means RP Point Bonus.
  10. *Important* Once A player has taken his Action it will start a 6 Hour Countdown for the other Player's to take theirs. If they fail to do this Draxul will post for them in their characters generic behavior. They will receive no point bonuses for this post. If this occurs 5 times your character will be controlled by Draxul.

Examples & Information

Stats will be used to do various things like:

  1. Strength - Determines your physical strength
  2. Constitution - Determines your Hp Dexterity - Determines your speed and stealth
  3. Intelligence - Determines your characters brain power!
  4. Wisdom - Determines your characters natural intuition
  5. Charisma - Determines how well your character will be liked by NPCS. (How much of a natural social butterfly they are)

A score of 12 is Average. Example: A character with 12 strength can do what everyday humans in real life do, lift 100 pounds or less. A character with 18 or higher Strength would be able to literally push a cow or lift a medium sized log, or perhaps break down a large door.

Example of Stat Use: The groups librarian walks into a room filled with dusty tomes. She naturally has a high intellect and high wisdom. Using these two skills she can correctly identify the enemies which you might encounter and research them using the books available. Yielding their resistances and weaknesses.

Abilities

Abilities damage will often be based on your stats. IE: To figure out how much damage a spell will do you just need to add the stats it has listed. You may cast as many abilities as you want each Phase. However you are limited by your Action Points! You may cast most abilities twice, if you have available Action Points. Most Abilities that spot secrets or hidden objects can only be cast once per Phase.

Basics of Play:

The game is broken down into 3 "Phases" or Turns. They are described here.

Phase 1: Exploration Phase:

The Exploration Phase is the primary means of searching a room and role playing. Players are allowed to spend Action Points, move, search, etc, through Role Playing. Each player can make 1 Post then they must wait for a DM Response Phase before posting again.

Example of the Exploration Phase:

  1. Player 1: As I walk into the room I tell the others behind me to becareful.
  2. Player 2: Chuckling I say to Player 1, "I don't fear such weak creatures."
  3. Player 3: "Yeah well Player 2, you'll be regreting that when one of them knocks you on your ass," I say as I carefully try to look into the next room.

You will now wait for a DM Response before posting again.

Quick Rules of the Exploration Phase:

  1. 1) No Double Posting
  2. 2) Wait for a DM Response to your action(s) before posting again.
  3. 3) Try to stay in character.
  4. 4) Try not to do a crazy amount actions in your post.
  5. Phase 2: "Event Phase":

The Event Phase begins once a puzzle or enemy is encountered and the Exploration Phase is then ended. During this phase all group members can post RP and take actions such as: breaking an object, move around the room, sniff the room, draw their weapon. They can also spend their Action Points in this phase as well(Dependent on their available Action Points). The DM will give a "Turn Order" based on the way the event started. Please post in this order.

    Examples:

Beatrice Hollow is being played by Jessie.

DM Response to Exploration Phase: After exploring the first room of the dungeon her group stumbles into a hidden stairwell. As they tumble down they land with a crash on a hard stone floor. In front of them stands a mummy his arms stretched out.

    Event Phase Response from Beatrice/Jessie:

Beatrice stands up quickly and places her staff in front of her to protect herself while she casts Hidden Paths for 2AP.

Now you can pair actions up as well. Say Beatrice casts Hidden Path for 2AP and the player playing Zese notices it. They can have Zese use Historical Advantage to decipher anything Beatrice see's further.

Beatrice RP --- "Upon seeing the skeleton in the first room Beatrice becomes overwhelmed with a strong urge to protect her friends from harm. She closes her eyes and try to peer into theveil(cast Hidden Path 2P)."

Zese RP --- Noticing Beatrice close her eyes and channel a vision Zese concentrates all her efforts on dicphering it (Evalute - Hidden Path 1AP) Zese tell's Beatrice tell her the vision as she is seeing it see.

Here is where it gets important to follow along

After you make your Event Post you must then wait for each other player to take their turn. Finally a DM Response will happen to all the groups actions at once. Only then can they make a new post explaining your next actions.

When the Event is over, IE: Creature Dead, Puzzle Solved, a DM Response will inform the group they have defeated the Event and are back to Exploration Mode where they can post at their leisure.

Quick Rules of the Event Phase:

    1. 1) Only one post per Event Round.
    2. 2) Wait for a DM Response before posting your next Event Action.
    3. 3) Try to stay in character.
    4. 4) Try not to do more than 2 physical actions. Ie: (Run & Attack), (Pick something up, Move).
    5. 5) Follow the turn order.

    Phase 3: Response Phase

This is the phase where the Dungeon Master (Draxul) responds to all events in the other Phases.

It is during the Response Phase that a new room is described or a picture is shown for the room.

Example: Zese cast Evaluate on a bookshelf or 1AP and Historical Advantage for 2AP.

DM Response: As Zese peers at the bookcase she spots a small dusty tomb with an odd symbol on it. As she is lost in thought an idea comes to her. "This book seems cursed who knows what would happen if we open it, but the symbol on it is the same as the door to the East."

    Movement:

The group consists of Zese and Kojax. The two of them are in the first room. They have completed the Event and/or are ready to move on. Kojax has been elected by the group during the first Event to lead the way.

    The following map is available:

    ExampleMovementDOY

The player who is in Charge of Kojax (Player 1) Decides that the best way to go is North to the next room. During the Exploration Phase he can suggest it is time to move on. If the group agrees than he can move to a new room.

All the player playing Kojax has to say to move to a new is:

"Kojax walks north towards a large wooden door as he opens it a loud creak echoes through the hallways he decides to enter carefully."

The whole group will follow by default and you will enter the room to the north as long as a majority agreed to it.

    Combat:

Combat is done through the Event Phase. It is very basic and should be easy to follow.

IE: If your group enters a room and encounters two Skeletons their stats will be posted like so:

    1. Name: Skeleton
    2. HP: 16
    3. Weapon: Rusty Sword
    4. Skill: Stab - The Skeleton lunges his sword at a nearby opponent dealing 6 Damage.

Each Skeleton will be placed on the map or their positions will be described during the Event Phase. Then will then take their turn before the players. The group will then respond to their turn in their Event Phase.

    Example:

For this example we are imagining that the group has just entered a new room. In the new room are 2 skeletons.

    DM Response:

As Kojax enters the room carefully. (Description of the room and possible picture) Just as he sees two skeletons off to the corners they seem to have spotted the group and make their move.

Exploration Phase ended. Event Phase Started.

The skeleton(1) corrects his jaw as he peers into Zese's eyes. Walking hastily towards her, he attempts to Stab her in the side. She cannot run away.

The skeleton(2) draws his rusted sword and strikes Leona who is standing to his right.

    Player Event Phase:

Zese realizes she won't be able to escape and places her wrists up to protect her body.

Kojax dashes between Zese and the skeleton(1) and bears his claws as he moves his right arm back he rends the skeleton(1). (Vicious Rend on Skeleton(1) 1AP)

Leona never caught off guard by such a puny creature blocks the blow with her shield and bashes him in the sternum. (Shield Bash on skeleton(2) 2AP)

When the turn is complete and a majority of players posted the result would look something like this.

    DM Response to Player Events:

Kojax has successfully saved Zese though he was stabbed just below his ribs through his abdomen (-6Hp). As his claws bore down on the skeleton he eviscerated it for (25Dmg) causing it to crumble into pieces. (+5 Points -Good Rp, Good Move)

Zese lowers her arms and see's Kojax in front of her a small pointed black protruding from his back. The blood trickles down.

The skeleton attacking Leona was no match for her shield which dealt 18 damage to the skeleton(2) and blew his body to pieces. (2 Points -Good Move)

The skeletons are defeated. Event Phase Ends. Exploration Phase Starts.

Q: Why did Leona take no damage?

A: Her Special! **Defensive Points (1/2 Con) = (8 Points of Damage Blocked) Skeletons only deal 6, so she was unharmed.
